Survival Guide 2008
Scorched Nuts 2008 is a gathering of a collaborative, creative community, largely based out of the tri-state region. It is built and ran by it's participants and volunteers. Everyone who attends is expected to find some way to Participate. SN08 will be a weekend event which combines sculpture, fire performance, music, dancing and the freedom of self expression to create a truly unique festival experience. The festival will officially run from Thursday to Sunday afternoon, although you are welcome to come early or stay longer if you arrange to pay for your site directly to Hannon's Camp America.
All participants are expected to demonstrate the 10 Principles of the Burning Man Project, particularly Self Reliance and Leave No Trace. Please be prepared to bring all supplies in and out with you. Our event strictly supports Decommodification, and the only vending available will be ice and firewood, supplied by Hannon's Camp America during the event.

You may arrive early if you pay Hannon’s Camp America a rate of $15 per night for an nonelectric site, or $20 per night for an electric site. If you arrive early you may camp where ever you like, however you maybe asked to move to move if your in a designated area. Also, be sure to check in when gates open to get your wristband.
Gate Policy
The gate will be open Thursday, June 19th from 2pm to 10pm; Friday, June 20th from 10am to 10pm; and Saturday, June 21st from 10am to 10pm. Tickets at the gate will be sold for $50. If you arrive when gates are closed, you have to have a valid ticket (sorry no ticket or wristband sales when gates are closed), or an “in and out” wristband (if you already have gone through the gate and are returning). Please park in a safe location and find a SN volunteer wearing a SN bandanna or carrying a walkie talkie. They will contact the Gatekeeper and arrange for your car to be let in. Avoid late arrivals if at all possible!
Come prepared to stay, bring everything you need because you are not allowed to go in and out once you arrive. The idea is that everyone is coming to stay, we don't want a lot of in and out traffic (it makes the gate crew's job that much harder, and they already put up with a lot) and we need to have a closed and subdued gate at night. If you want to come and participate, come in the daylight (easier to set up camp) and come prepared to stay. Exceptions will be made for emergencies but most be authorized with the Head Gatekeeper.
Parking
Parking is limited so please carpool, it is better for the Mother Earth anyways! Parking at campsites is limited. Registered Theme camps will be permitted 2 cars at their camp, and non-registered camps will be permitted 1 car per campsite. Please park towards the rear of your campsite to leave walkways and drives open. All other cars will be directed where to park. Remember the fewer cars at SN the more room we have to play!
The Site
Hannon’s Camp America, 8501 Camden College Corner Rd, College Corner, Ohio. It is a beautiful 27-acre private campground near Hueston Woods State Park. There is a large barn (Center Camp) available for a multitude of activities during the day, along with music and dancing at night.
The campground is broken down into 2 main sections. The “downstairs” area consists of the tent camping area, which we have rented out for our event. The second area, “upstairs”, has the student and family cabins. This year we ask that you stay in the lower area. If you have rented a bunk or cabin, then you will be directed on where to go when you check in at the gate. Cabin rentals are available through HCA and must be registered in advance.
Tent camping
We will primarily be camping on the “downstairs” camping area, with some camps in the “Middle Earth” (nonelectric) and “Island” (walk-in) areas. There are 28 marked sites, some of which are pre-assigned to Theme camps.
If you are not a registered Theme Camp, camping is done on a first come first served basis. The Gatekeepers will gladly assist you in finding a location to suit your needs. All registered Theme Camps will have a reserved area set aside for them. There is approximately 1 power outlet per campsite, however not all of the outlets are working. Theme camps can request a power outlet and get first priority. If there are left over outlets they will be for public use. Please do not unplug other people’s cords without permission! Be very careful of the amount of power you are using, as you can trip a breaker and short out the campgrounds! Please use surge protected cords if possible.
Please remember you must bring everything you need even water; this is an experiment in being self-sufficient for a couple of days. Don't forget a couple of camping chairs, cooking supplies and equipment, and light for nighttime.
Cabins
You may rent a cabin or bunk by contacting Jeanne at Jeanne@hannonscampamerica.com. There are 2 family cabins available that have 6-10 bunks per cabin. They do have bathrooms and kitchenettes. These will be shared spaces.
RV’s
Only 5 RV’s will be permitted st SN08. RV’s must be pre-registered and there is an addition $10 for RV’s. You can find the link to register your RV at http://www.scorchednuts.org/tickets.html any vehicle longer then a full sized van will be considered an RV. RV's will be parked along the front of the grounds to help create more privacy for our event.
Restrooms
There is a shower house with men's and women's toilets and showers on the downstairs area. Each has 2 toilets and open “gym” style showers. We will also provide port-a-potties depending on attendance. The water on the grounds is sulfur well water and often has a strong odor. Please do not plan on using the on site water for drinking.
Remember, “If it doesn’t come from your body it doesn’t belong in the potty!!!”
The Woods and Island
This year, Hannon’s Camp America has agreed to let us install semi permanent sculptures and creations along the “ Island ” paths on the lower levels of their campgrounds. This is a beautiful wooded area which has been abused and misused by local patrons for years, and the Hannon family is very excited to see us create something unique and educational out of this prime location. This year the Island will feature sculpture, treehouses, tire swings, benches and a compost area. Feel free to explore and enjoy this wonderful area. Walk in camping is permitted, but please do not light fires outside of the bonfire pit.
Sun
Not all the campsites are shaded, so bring something to make some shade such as a tent, tarps, rope, stakes, umbrellas, and poles. Come prepared for the sun with enough sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, water, etc.
Rain
Be prepared for rain!!! Hopefully the most we will get will be the brief rain shower!Bring a tarp or three, duck in your tent, bring rain protection, get wet, do whatever you want just remember to think about how you are going to deal with any potential rain BEFORE you go. Bottom line: prepare for rain, better safe than sorry, it as easy as a tarp or two, some rope, and some ingenuity.
Insects and Critters
Bring insect repellent; the insects will be bad. There is a running creek on the ground so there are many mosquitoes in season. Also there are a variety of spiders in the area. Raccoons and other critters will stay away during the noisy hours, but please be mindful of where you leave trash and waste water as they will invade if they get a chance!
Light
Bring at least two sources of light, it can get really dark at the site and having a light source is more than a convenience. Please avoid using disposable, wasteful glow sticks. Reusable products are the best! Bring EL wire art and blinkies if you’ve got them. Headlamps work great when you need both hands.
This year we will be using participant supplied Lanterns to light our paths. Please purchase or create several tea or votive candle lanterns to hang on the road or path outside your camp. The Lamplighters will install and remove lantern holders on the roads and paths before the event. The Lamplighters will also ceremonially light every lantern each evening. It is our goal that if you the participants and theme camps supply your own lanterns, they will reflect your theme or personality and add to the beauty of the night.
Fires
There will be large bonfires every night in the oversized fire pit in the lower level campgrounds. Everyone is invited to gather at the fire circle after 3am for late night revelry as we ask electronic music and performances to cease for the evening. Also all art cars and mutant vehicles must avoid the main fire circle for safety and consideration. There are some general rules the Firetenders ask you to follow:
1. Leave no fire untended. If we find an untended fire, we will extinguish it. Leaving an untended fire is grounds for removal from the festival. This includes candles inside tents.
2. Build fires only in established fire circles. They already have a ring of rocks around them. Fires not in established fire circles must be contained and suspended so they leave no burn scar on the ground.
3. Firewood bundles will be available for purchase at the gate during gate hours. Please plan to have some extra cash for firewood as we are not allowed to bring in outside firewood. Avoid cutting or collecting deadfall from the woods and surrounding areas.
4. During the festival there will be several large fires. Do not work on these fires without express permission from a Woodbuster.
5. Frequently drums will be playing around a fire, and people will also be dancing around the fire. When this is happening, please do not stand still next to the fire. Step back so the dancers have a clear path.
6. The Firetenders are not Rangers - but we know how to reach the Rangers. If there is a problem around a fire, talk to a Firetender.
Due to Emerald Ash Borer, NO OUTSIDE FIRE WOOD IS PERMITTED.
Kids
Our event strives to be radically inclusive, and as such families are more than welcome! However no one under 18 will be permitted to enter without a consenting guardian. Guardians are responsible for the supervision and safety of their children and will be asked to sign a waiver of understanding and permission at the gate. Children under 12 should not be allowed to roam camps without supervision due to the adult content of the festival and safety hazards of campgrounds. If you consider your camp to be adult content oriented please let us know so we can place your camp in the new, improved “Red Light District”. Camps do have the right to ask unsupervised children to leave their site for any reason but all participants are expected to be respectful and kind to the families that join us. There will be family oriented events during the day, however we do ask that no children under 12 be at the main fire circles past midnight.
There is no predesignated Family or quiet camping areas, however if you wish to be placed in a site away from the main traffic flow and noise areas please contact themecamps@scorchednuts.com with your request. We do ask that all large scale sound systems and music cease by 3am for the consideration of those needing to rest.
Is anyone interested in putting together a Kids Camp? This would be an area where kids could play with other kids and for parents to hang with them. The idea is to let the kids have their own area for their own comfort, and to make it easier for parents and guardians to take care of them in safety. If you are interested in organizing a kid’s Camp please contact Participate@scorchednuts.com.
Dogs
You are free to bring your dog as long as you are a responsible guardian for your pooch. Sorry, no other animals are allowed; this is for the animal's protection and for everyone's piece of mind. Dog owner/guardians are responsible for bagging (and later throwing out) their pet’s droppings as they are dropped. Dogs must be under control at ALL times, if it is loose it must be near its guardian and under voice control. If a dog is not easily controlled it must be on a leash, never out of sight, or better yet, don't bring that one. If you have to leave your dog for a while tie them up at your campsite, don't allow them to wander. If a dog attacks another dog or a human the dog and owner may be asked to leave the event, owner will be permitted to return without the animal.

Video and pictures may be taken for personal use only. Commercial use is not permitted. Please gain permission before recording or taking images of someone.
Sound
Our intention with this interactive arts festival is to have music, events, activities, and art all day and all night for 4 days. We do ask that all large scale sound systems cease activity at 3am for the consideration of those needing rest. This is a very open site and sound travels well.
LEAVE NO TRACE
This is a LEAVE NO TRACE event, come prepared to not leave anything behind. We will not have dumpster access this year so you must plan on removing all of your own garbage and recyclables. Bring gloves and sturdy garbage bags and be prepared to take away your own trash and any other trash left behind you can grab. Everyone who attends is expected to collect and transport away all their own trash plus any found garbage they can dump. Please try NOT to bring any glass bottles, they make a mess when broken and are harder to carry away than crushed cans. It is up to all of us to leave the site clean, and the state of the site when we leave will be a main factor in the decision whether to rent the land to us again. Let's make sure everyone understands our commitment to protecting the land by LEAVING NO TRACE. Fully participate by not leaving something for someone else to take care of.
Participation at SN08
Scorched Nuts is a 10 Principles event, meaning that we are dedicated to following the 10 Principles outlined by the Burning Man Project. However the key ingredient to making Scorched Nuts a successful event is for everyone to PARTICIPATE! Every person who joins us for the event is expected to find someway to give of themselves with the goal of making a better community for everyone. Each individual pays there way here, there is no compensation for performance, volunteer work or artwork. Everyone is here as an equal, and as such we all have part to play.
There are many ways, great and small, to Participate. You can volunteer with one of our volunteer teams, from Medics to Earth Guardians, and give a few hours of your time to making our infrastructure run smoothly. You can register as a theme camp and offer some sort of interactive experience. You could make a special food or beverage to share with the other Participants. You can dance, sing or hand out gifts to show your joy with being part of the community. The options are as limitless as your imagination.
However there are several ways you are expected to Participate at the event. For one, please come prepared to be Self-Reliant. Do not expect anyone to cut your firewood, share their supplies or take care of you. These things may happen, but you must be prepared to care for yourself. Also, every participant is expected to Leave No Trace! This means that there should be no evidence of your having camped and partied at Hannon’s Camp America . Our goal is to leave the grounds in better shape than when we arrived, and to do that everyone is expected to Pack in their supplies and Pack out their trash! Please do not use the on site dumpsters for any personal waste. Finally, everyone is expected to respect their fellow Participants. Your neighbor’s way of expressing themselves may not be your preference, but you must respect their right to do so and avoid all conflicts possible.
If we are successful, then Scorched Nuts will become more than a 4 day camping event, it will become a temporary city filled with joy and community. Please look through this site and find the best way for you to Participate during the event. If you have any questions please contact participate@scorchednuts.com.
Gate Keepers
The majority of Gate shifts will be filled before the event, so please let Charlie know if you can spare a few hours to meet and greet our incoming Participants. This is a great way to meet new people and get acquainted with our community. Gatekeepers will be required to go through orientation with Charlie before their shift and will be held responsible for any sales made during their shift. A great way to participate with Gatekeepers during the event is to spend some time with them at the gate! Step up and find out if there are any shifts that still need covered, help cover restroom breaks or bring snacks to share!
Performances
If you would like to perform at SN08 please submit a form or contact performances@scorchednuts.com. Otherwise you can check in with Center Camp and find out if there are any performance slots available. Center Camp will be held in the big red barn and has access to light, electricity and sound equipment.
Earth Guardians
This is a pack it in, pack it out event. There will be no dumpster service at the event so please make arrangements to remove ALL of your waste yourself. Make an effort to reduce excess packaging before arrival and recycle all materials possible. Aluminum recycling will be offered outside of Katet Camp, however all cans must be rinsed and crushed for easy removal. Be aware of MOOP (Matter Out Of Place), and pick up everything the moment it is dropped. It is expected that we will leave the campground in better shape than we found it. The Earth Guardians help ensure that we meet these expectations and you become an EG the moment you stop to pick up trash! We will need volunteers to stay at the close of the event and sweep through the grounds to ensure we do not leave a trace. There will also be a compost area available on the island so please save compostable waste separately.
Lamp Lighters
The Lamp Lighters will be recruited on site to assist with the ceremonial lighting of the lanterns. This is a group with a long history in the Burner community and Lamp Lighting can be a simple but elegant way to add to our event. The Participant provided lanterns will create beauty and bring personality to the camps they represent, as well as providing light for our paths and roadways. At the end of the event we will need volunteers to help remove the lantern holders and check the ground for wax or debris.
Fire Conclave
All fire performers must have a safety in place before lighting. Please assume personal responsibility for your art and be aware of your surroundings. If you would like to perform in the Effigy Conclave Performance you must pre-register with Grimm and attend all mandatory meetings.
Fire Tenders
The crew of volunteers that build and tend the fires at Scorched Nuts are called Woodbusters or Firetenders. You can tell a Woodbuster or Firetender by their red or flame suspenders. Anyone may volunteer to work with the Woodbusters - but you need to have appropriate work clothes. Jeans and boots are preferred. If you really bust your hump, you might even get your own suspenders.
Effigy Crew
The burning of the effigy is the climax of any burn. It occurs Saturday night sometime after dark. While the effigy at Burning Man in Black Rock City, NV is always “the man,” regional burns have taken artistic liberties with their effigies and we are no exception.
This year’s Scorched Nuts effigy is most ambitious and very different indeed. It is primarily composed of a ~ten foot tall modified GONZO fist, the logo of one Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, who so loved the world that he gave it GONZO. Appropriately, ours is a bit different as you’ll see. We’ve made it very much our own.
You can make it your own, too. The effigy will be out for public viewing and interaction throughout the weekend. Feel free to take pictures, touch it and even add small personal bits to be burned in the fire. Please do limit the amount of synthetic materials, however.
Also, please don’t poke, prod, lift, push or otherwise molest the effigy. It is a complex work of art lovingly created by the effigy team over weeks and weeks for the community to enjoy. Please respect it as such. Most importantly, the effigy is constructed of flammable materials. Keep fire and lit cigarettes AWAY from the effigy.
Medics
To be a Medic we ask that you are CPR certified. You must be pre-registered with Kristal Light if you would like to be on the Medic team. You must become familiar with the Emergency Plans and follow procedure at all times. If you have a Nextel phone, please let a Medic or Ranger know at the event because Nextel is the only company that gets service at Hannon's.
Rangers
If you're looking for a way to be a major part of Scorched Nuts, are known for being a non-confrontational mediator, and calm and efficient in emergencies, e-mail Poosie Kat at rangers@scorchednuts.com. Let me know the amount of time you'd like to volunteer and any times that simply will not work for you, no later than one week before the event. If you decide to volunteer once you're at the event, find me, all Rangers will be required to wear their orange bandannas where it is easily visible, or go to Pokes Smokin' Knob camp, our home base. We'll have a short information and training session on Friday (time to be determined).
Safety
While Scorched Nuts is built on community and cooperation, that doesn't mean citizens are protected from the actions of those with bad intentions. Maintain awareness of your personal safety at the event. Secure your valuables when away from camp. Introduce yourself to neighbors and your local Rangers. Work together to keep your neighborhood secure. Make new friends, but be alert to the actions of those you meet. Be cautious about accepting drinks in open containers from strangers. Most importantly, use and trust your best instincts. Please keep in mind that you are responsible for yourself at all times, in every regard, as you approach, once you enter, and as you leave Scorched Nuts.
Anybody under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult of 21 or older. Older kids are going to want to stretch their limits and go off on their own, so make some guidelines that you both feel comfortable with. Get to know your neighbors. Kids are encouraged to play, have fun, and participate like any other participant. Parents will be required to make sure that their children (under 18 years) do not wander into the 18+ area of Scorched Nuts.
Underage drinking is forbidden by law. Sex acts are prohibited in the civic space of Scorched Nuts and in unrestricted public environments.
Scorched Nuts can be an erotically charged environment. We want to help prevent sexual harassment and assault while ensuring that sex-positive free expression thrives! It is imperative to know and express your own sexual boundaries and to ask about and respect your partners' boundaries. As the Bureau of Erotic Discourse (B.E.D.) reminds us: Silence is not consent. Communication is the best lubricant!
The possession of firearms including BB guns, air rifles, or paint ball guns, within Hannon's Camp America is prohibited. Neither our event nor the campgrounds is suitable for recreational shooting.
If you or someone you know (or encounter) requires medical assistance, contact a Scorched Nut Medic volunteer or a Ranger, or visit our Medical Clinic at Pornyata. Trained emergency medical personnel are on duty 24-hours a day, and emergency evacuation is available. Please avoid injury and act responsibly.
Rangers (in regards to Safety)
Rangers are participants in the role of non-confrontational mediators, and work throughout the campgrounds and its perimeters to ensure the collective survival of the community. Rangers are the mediators of public safety and providers of information. By encouraging and facilitating communication, the Rangers promote awareness of potential hazards. They address situations within our community that would otherwise require outside intervention. There are a few safety hazards for which outside intervention may become necessary, such as burning art that is not your own or physical violence against others, to name a couple. Rangers are emphatically not the police or a paramilitary organization. Violation of these rules, or violent or anti-social behavior, can result in revocation of your ticket and ejection from the event without refund.
Medical Team
The Medic team are first responders; they take care of what they can handle and if they can't they will call in to the proper authorities for help. Medic headquarters is at Camp Pornyata, or you can meet a Medic at the Gate. Under the best conditions they will not do much more than bandaging a few scrapes and keeping an eye out for safety. Just be aware that in case you have any medical emergency at Scorched Nuts 2008 the Medical Team (as well as the Rangers and others) will be there to help you.
The Law
Scorched Nuts policy is to follow all laws and to be a good citizens; it is part of our organizational mission to be civically responsible. As such, our policy for the event is, NOTHING illegal is allowed. It is up to each participant to help us keep to this policy; please do not bring anything illegal. Especially if it could hurt anyone including yourself; or get you, others, or all of us in trouble.
Scorched Nuts 2008 will be so much more enjoyable if you are sober and in control, be yourself and be responsible and you will find that you will have the best experience. Everybody bears responsibility for their actions and the expectation is that we will all work together to ensure group safety. Those that do not respect this may be escorted from the event.
Alcohol
Scorched Nuts does not promote the use of alcohol nor do we prohibit its lawful use. There is NO vending within the event site and Scorched will not be selling alcohol or anything (except ice). If responsible adults of legal age want to gather and drink alcohol they are entitled to providing they are responsible and do not let any underage persons drink. Everyone who goes through the gate can show your ID and get the "over 21" wristband. Anyone who is not wearing one is assumed to be under 21. Those providing alcohol to minors that are brought to our attention will be escorted out of the event.
Illegal Drugs
Scorched Nuts, as an organization, we do not condone the sale, use, or promotion of illegal drugs. The same laws that apply on Main Street, USA also applies to public areas of our events. The same laws that apply at your house behind a closed door also apply to your zipped up tent. Problem drug users and dealers that are brought to our attention will be escorted out of the event.
Fireworks
Use of fireworks or explosives at the event site is prohibited. Fireworks could not only injure and burn people it can cause a fire and destroy property. Anyone caught lighting fireworks may be escorted out of the event.
Firearms
Firearms are explicitly BANNED, no guns are allowed inside the event site. Those discovered with firearms at the event will be told to take them off the event site permanently or they will be escorted out of the event. Failure to comply will result in a permanent ban from future Ohio Burner events.
